My Dad bought a type 3 station wagon while we were living in Canberra, much like this one, although ours was a pale grey - about this shade, but grey not light blue (if that makes sense).
I actually don't remember this one having much trouble, but it was used for all manner of things - including a paper round at one stage.
There is only one breakdown that springs readily to mind - my oldest brother was driving it, and as he was accelerating away (in his normal fashion) suddenly there was a bit of a pop sound and then a huge trail of oil from under the rear of it - a plug (maybe even the sump plug - I don't really remember) blew out from under the motor and it just drained the whole load of oil onto the road.
Apart from that she seemed to me to be a very reliable little wagon.
Served the family well, including towing the trailer loaded to the top of the frame with all our worldly possessions as we traveled across Australia from Canberra to Perth.
Mum Drove our XA falcon wagon towing the Caravan, Dad drove the VW towing the trailer, and my oldest brother and my sister drove a Mini which had seen better days.
Maybe that trip needs its own post, as it involved all three cars.
But my memories of the VW are overwhelmingly good ones - I can still hear that off beat sound in my memories.
It made it all the way here to Perth, and I actually don't remember what happened to that one. It just seems to disappear from my memory, fading away, rather than actually leaving our family.
I am 100% certain my Dad could tell me exactly what the cause of it's demise was, but I don't remember if they sold it to get something else or if it died.
I would love to get a Type 3 for myself, but I think it would be the fastback.
That "almost Porsche" look is something I have always loved.... possibly even more than the old 911 itself.
Type 3 fastback, dropped, wide tyres on chrome mags, cleaned and simplified.... mmmmm definitely one for the wish list.
